Affairs typically conjure up the image of a person having a romantic or physical relationship outside of a primary, romantic relationship. However, there is another phenomenon that is just a damaging, it is called enmeshment. The enmeshed relationship is often characterized by unclear or diffused physical, emotional, sexual or intellectual boundaries, and over involvement in one another’s lives. A daughter may have difficulty separating her feelings and thoughts from her father’s. As she matures, the enmeshed daughter does not develop the ability to accurately assess an unhealthy external environment. Her behaviors are often determined by distorted thinking patterns based on an illusion, thus creating a trauma bond. The ‘affair’ with father continues throughout adulthood. This sensitive topic is often overlooked and must be addressed if a daughter is to begin to break these trauma bonds and form healthy attachments with self and others. When the need for intimacy is avoided, what happens when she marries dad? There is hope.

Dee Gardner-Wilson, LMSW, LCDC, CSAT is a professional speaker, educator, workshop facilitator, Certified Sex Addiction therapist, and EMDR therapist.
